Gardeners Chingford Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Chingford is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our overall aims and the arrangements we put in place to manage risks associated with our work.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our operations. We aim to identify hazards in all areas of our work, assess the associated risks and implement effective control measures. Health and Safety considerations are integrated into planning, supervision and delivery of all gardening and landscaping services.
We seek to continually improve our standards through regular review of this policy, monitoring of performance, and encouraging open communication about safety concerns and suggestions.
Legal Compliance and Responsibilities
Gardeners Chingford will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and associated guidance applicable to our gardening, landscaping and maintenance activities. We recognise our duty of care to our workforce and to others who may be impacted by our work on residential and commercial gardens and outdoor spaces.
The management team is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained and communicated. Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day safety management on each site, including briefing team members, monitoring safe practices and addressing hazards. Every employee and subcontractor has a responsibility to work safely, follow instructions, use protective equipment correctly and report hazards, incidents or near misses immediately.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work on a new site or task, we carry out appropriate risk assessments to identify potential hazards, such as working with powered gardening equipment, manual handling of soil and materials, working at height, use of chemicals, and seasonal weather conditions. The findings are used to establish safe systems of work and to select suitable tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
Risk assessments are reviewed whenever there are significant changes to work methods, equipment or site conditions, and are periodically updated to ensure they remain current and effective.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Chingford ensures that all staff receive adequate information, instruction, training and supervision to carry out their duties safely and competently. New team members receive an induction that covers relevant health and safety rules, site procedures and emergency arrangements.
Where work involves specialised equipment or higher-risk activities, only trained and competent personnel are authorised to undertake those tasks. Ongoing refresher training and toolbox talks are used to reinforce safe working practices and to keep teams informed about any procedural changes.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
All gardening machinery, tools and equipment used by Gardeners Chingford are selected, maintained and inspected to ensure they are safe and fit for purpose. Equipment is used only for its intended purpose and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance.
Defective or damaged equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported to a supervisor. Only authorised personnel are allowed to carry out maintenance or adjustments to machinery. Guards and safety devices must never be removed or bypassed.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn as instructed. Depending on the task, this may include items such as safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, hard hats or respiratory protection.
Employees are responsible for taking reasonable care of any protective equipment issued to them and for reporting any loss, damage or defects so that replacements can be provided.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Chingford aims to minimise manual handling risks by using mechanical aids, planning work sensibly and encouraging good lifting techniques.
Where heavy or awkward loads such as paving, aggregates or large plants must be handled, team lifting or mechanical assistance is used whenever practicable. Staff are trained to recognise the limits of safe manual handling and to avoid unnecessary strain.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Considerations
The use of any gardening chemicals or substances is carefully controlled. Only approved products are used, and they are handled and stored in accordance with manufacturer safety information and regulatory requirements.
We seek to minimise environmental impact by using safe methods for waste handling, composting and disposal of garden materials. Chemicals are applied only where necessary and in a way that protects people, pets, wildlife and planting.
Working at Height and Site Safety
Where work at height is required, such as hedge cutting, tree work or accessing elevated areas, suitable equipment and methods are used to prevent falls. Ladders, platforms and other access equipment are selected and used in line with safe practices, and only competent staff may carry out such tasks.
On every site, we take reasonable steps to protect clients, neighbours and the general public. This may include setting up exclusion zones, using signs or barriers where appropriate, and scheduling tasks to reduce risk to others.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergencies
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported immediately to a supervisor or manager so that they can be recorded, investigated and, where necessary, corrective actions taken to prevent recurrence.
Gardeners Chingford ensures that appropriate first aid supplies are available and that there are trained persons capable of providing initial assistance following an incident. Emergency procedures are communicated to staff and, where relevant, to clients, including arrangements for evacuation and contacting emergency services.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Chingford values the input of its workforce and clients in improving health and safety. We encourage staff to raise concerns, make suggestions and participate in discussions about safer ways of working.
This policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable for the nature and scale of our gardening services. Revisions are communicated to all employees and, where appropriate, shared with clients so that expectations and responsibilities remain clear.
By implementing this Health and Safety policy, Gardeners Chingford aims to create and maintain a working environment where risks are controlled and everyone involved in our projects can be confident that their welfare is taken seriously.
